Life playlist - Childish Gambino

I'm going to keep this short and sweet...I don't even know why I'm here at school today, it's two days before holidays and literally nothing is happening. This is a joke. I would learn more in an isolation tank.

I have listened to just about every Childish Gambino song, trying to stay calm with the knowledge that I'm not going to be seeing him at Splendour in the Grass later in the year as I am not attending on the day that he is. I've watched a hell of a lot of interviews with Donald Glover (also known as Childish Gambino) and I couldn't not write something.

I am a huge Childish Gambino fan, and ever since I saw Donald Glover in Girls (yikes, not the gender, the TV series by Lena Dunham), I've been a massive fan of his acting also. Not to mention his writing for 30 Rock...Donald does it all.

I read a some lame quote once that said something like 'If your life was a movie, would you watch it?" Ever since I saw this I have been making a list of songs that would be great in a playlist for my life movie.
I cannot think of one Childish Gambino song that wouldn't be perfect for a life playlist. I'll let you in on something, when I'm having a shitty day I listen to one of his songs, usually something like Sweatpants, Bonfire, Freaks and Geeks, 3005, and they instantly lift my mood. No, that's wrong, they don't make me feel completely fine again, they just make me more confident in myself. They cause me to realise that it doesn't matter..."I'm doing me better than you're doing you". (I'm not, I'm sure you're doing you excellently also, but when I'm feeling down, sometimes that's just what I need to hear). I don't know, I'm sure we all have that one artist, or album that just makes us realise that it's all fine, to take things more lightly...something to distract us from reality for a bit. And Childish Gambino does this for me.

I think he would appreciate that to be honest, he has plenty of interviews which I cherish because he explains that we are in an age where we can genuinely do anything we want to do. Instead of imagining yourself as a well-loved musician, respected sports star, or admired blogger put your words to action, because it can happen. It is easier than ever to be respected for your talents, so why not put yourself out there. The people you see succeeding in their position (such as Donald Glover) are the people that believed in themselves, and worked hard to be where they are.

Here's a good interview if you are interested:

Enough of this pep talk, do what you want. Here are some of my picks for my Childish Gambino life playlist. If you can honestly tell me that you can't imagine these songs playing in the background of your life, I'll be shocked.

Coldplay takes over Sticky Fingers' King Street

If you pay attention to celebrity news, you may have heard about Coldplay's recent filming of Sky Full of Stars in Australia's own King Street, Sydney. If you're a Sticky Fingers' fan like myself, you might be slightly disturbed by the similarity between Coldplay's video clip and Sticky Fingers Australia Street clip (shown below).

I'm not going to lie, I am impressed with Sticky Fingers' reaction to this whole situation. "We are not bitter, if they did copy ours we are flattered and we are glad to see they got some love for Newtown because it is a cool place" says bass player, Patty Cornwall (Vincent, 2014).

I have to admit, although I tend to be on my phone a fair bit, I couldn't agree more with Cornwall when he commented on the way in which the fans seemed to film themselves in the Coldplay clip, almost spending more time ensuring that Chris Martin was in their shot, than actually embracing the experience.
Cornwall states that "[they] already getting a cameo role in [their] favourite band's video clip but [they] have to go further and film [themselves] and everything. It's boring and it's a bit sad" (Vincent, 2014).

Coldplay feat. a hell of a lot of fans filming themselves being filmed.
(Not my photo, reference below)

I personally am a fan of Coldplay, I think what they did was impressive for a band of their status. It was an absolutely brilliant way to involve and give thanks to their fans, the ones who brought them to where they are today. Technically, they did absolutely nothing wrong, although if they were 'copying' Sticky Fingers' clip, I do think they should at least give a bit of a shout out to our Australian band.
I'm just am very shocked, as I am sure many of you are also, at how similar both of the clips were. Both being filmed in the same area, with the same style of playing live music with a gathering of fans walking along side. Kinda crazy, but if both bands are lighthearted about the situation, woohoo!

You can buy Coldplay's most recent album on iTunes now --> https://itunes.apple.com/au/album/ghost-stories/id829909653

And (!), as much awaited, Sticky Fingers will be releasing their album on August 1st WORLDWIDE! So make sure you are right on that.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard

Does the Australian wonder-group King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard ever sleep? Or are all seven of them hyped up all night, gazing into lava-lamps, listening to a Sargent Pepper LP and creating some of the best damn garage-psych to ever grace our great nations shore? Based on their almost unbelievable work ethic from the last few years, definitely the latter.
A couple of weeks ago the lad’s dropped their latest video for Hot Wax; an acid-fuelled, post-apocalyptic, psychedelic masterpiece, complete with trancelike animation, plastered over a rocking snare beat and screaming harmonica melodies.

The tune alone speaks as testimony to the incredible work ethic, out-there creativity and raw talent that these longhairs have somehow maintained over the last few years. And although the boys wouldn’t stand out knocking back a cold one in any run-down pub, their uniquely vintage, yet avant-garde psychedelic surf pop sound can only keep growing. As I type this currently, the band is touring over America, playing the Austin Psych festival and supporting fellow industry legends, Thee Oh Sees.
So throw on your dad’s old denim jacket, pick up case of XXXX, and call your boys around to scream some sloppy King Gizzard at the top of your dirty lungs all night long.

Edward Sharpe and The Magnetic Zeros cut Jade Castrinos from the band

I feel as if I am witnessing a break up between a couple that were made by the heavens.

Edward and Jade from Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros have played a huge role in  not only my life, but many lives throughout the world.
Like many, I have spent hours and hours listening to songs such as Home (I apologise so much for my favourite song being the most cliched choice possible).

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros are an indie-folk/rock band from Los Angeles, California. They formed in 2007 as a collaboration between Alex Ebert and Jade Castrinos.
Unfortunately...I am heartbroken to type...that the band has parted ways with the much adored Jade Castrinos.

I was not quick enough to get a screen shot, as it was deleted and changed, but the awful news was initially announced via Jade's Instagram 'bio' which stated:

"For seven years I sang and wrote music with Edward Sharpe. They voted me off of tour a week before they left, via email. lol"

In my opinion I feel as if that 'lol' is more of a 'Lord Oh Lord (WHY?!)' than a 'Laughing Out Loud'. I know I am wondering why?

In reply to this sudden announcement, the band posted this:

I think it is safe to say that this is an awful situation and loss to fans, but also to the band. As much criticism as we may have for them, it is hard to understand what has gone on without the information.

Perhaps this post is "beneath [me] and it is grotesquely damaging', but I do think that if this sort of news is going to be broken to a fan base as passionate as theirs, in a way such as this, than an uproar is expected.
I'm sure I speak for many when I say I am distraught with the news, but I also pass on my best wishes to Jade, Alex, Nora, Christian, Mark, Orpheo, Mitchell, Seth, Josh, Stewart, and Christopher.

Missing them already
